2017 / Every year when the windy season starts, various kite festivals take place in Bali. These are religious events with an intention to send a message to the Hindu gods to create plentiful crops and harvest. Teams compete with their kites, called layangans, in different categories depending on their size and shape. The best launch, design and longest flight, that’s where it’s at. It can become dramatic when kites crash or fall. Especially with “janggan” type of kite. It has ribbon tail which can be impressively 100 meters long. It is a big event. Gamelan music in the background, refreshments, numerous crowds. You can easily get run over.
